Andreas, while I share your frustration, I've come to the conclusion that "group think" tends to take something that is "elegant in its simplicity" (the core of SVG) and make it "unimplementable in its complexity". I've been involved in standards work (in manufacturing, not web standards) and have seen this happen repeatedly. It is also very valid criticism to point out overlap between standards efforts, not for territorial fighting, but hopefully to increase the efficiency and focus of both efforts and accelerate their development (which, generally, increases their uptake/acceptance). The W3C did the right thing by defining multiple support levels for SVG (Tiny, Basic, etc.). I'd simply like to see vendors start with SOMETHING - Tiny or Basic, and go from there. In parallel, however, the community is creating a very, very high hurdle for many software vendors to leap by requesting a scope of functionality that has a high cost to implement, overlap with some of their other initiatives, and, at present, limited demand. I, for one, think EVERYONE would be well served if we saw broad support for SVG Basic. The rest can follow. sXBL and all the other goodies can happen over time. But we need to find something, like it or not, that companies like Microsoft and Macromedia, because of their market presence, can find common ground on and cost effectively implement for their customers. I think SVG rocks, and I've always been a strong proponent of AJAX-like concepts before they were in vogue. With native support for SVG Basic in most modern browsers, just envision the possibilities!!! Can you understand why many have become a bit cynical? It is borne of frustration and "opportunity lost" more than criticism... Thanks for listening. Rant over. - Rick
