One can argue that both ways for days upon days, but it would be 
completely irrelevant since DOM 2 Core became a Rec almost five years 
ago and there's no way one could possibly revert the decisions that were 
made back then.

Again, most people who use XML regularly make their own wrappers around 
the DOM to fit their style and take shortcuts that they would prefer. 
There's nothing keeping you from writing your own, and if you find 
like-minded people you could even release it for others to use.
