Well, I guess that's the never ending debate between those who want to
implement things rapidely by steps and those who want all at once at a later
time or nothing. Obviously each option has its own pro and contra. You
perfectly advocated the pro of one of the options while showing the contra of
the other. I guess in no time someone of the list will make a reply that will
show the same picture in negative. I'm sure you can see it coming, and that
even you would be able to write it yourself, even if it wouldn't reflect your
opinion. I mean you certainly can see the advantages of the path the FF
developers took and the disadvantaged of the path you're suggesting.

I think that the truth, the wisdom or whatever is not on just one side.
Cynically looking at the situation, internet SVG is not in a good shape
today, with a promizing but incomplete browser implementation on one hand,
and a seemingly dead ended almost complete implementation that requieres a
user installation on the other. Not to mention that one implementation relies
on a still growing browser, while the other uses a solid user base browser.
So in a word, your opinion reflects the point of view of those who invested
time and efforts to get things moving on with ASV and would like this
investment to not be at loss, which is perfectly understandable, but seems to
rely on a relatively short term agenda. On the long run, whoever can say for
sure where the best odds are certainly should use his/her gift to play
lotery. Not everybody would bet on ASV though.

Now, what would be the perspective of a SVG new comer (that'd be me)? Simply
put, don't put all your eggs in the same basket and implement stuff that work
in both FF and ASV, either by limiting the features you use or by double
implementing everything. If this situation makes you raise an eyebrow
thinking "deja-vu", that's perfectly normal. Same situation (only partially
compatible browsers), same consequences (double implementations). Of course
those who already have something that works on one side may not consider
doubling their effort as a valid option.

Now, what would be a reasonable motion to support during that transition
period that will lead to an unforseeable future? I don't think that would be
to lock down, even temporarily, one of the possible pathes. I don't have a
definate answer either, but I would say that competition is generally a good
thing to have. Now FF (as well as some more confidential browsers, no offence
intended) are compeeting with a seemingly dead body. That's probably the only
chance to get that body some revival, so locking down FF is probably sawing
the branch on which you are sitting.

Oh well, just my two cents, give or take 1.

Sylvain
