Hi Bill,

Thanks for the sources. I'm going to look after research papers about 
labeling algorithms. And I know the carto site very good by now :).

symbols are ideal for icons in svg. But the viewer I'm using has some 
issues with that (eSVG on PocketPC). When I turn off a layer which only 
contains symbols by setting the display attribute from inline to none, 
the layer simply doesn't dissapear. So far I have been using symbols for 
icons, but I will need a workaround for this problem on eSVG.
