Hi, You should really ask question nr 2 on the Batik mailing list. Regarding question 1:
Have a look at the "display" and "visibility" attribute. display="none" means that this part won't be rendered and isn't regarded as part or the DOM tree. Visibility is a bit different - it just doesn't display but can still be referenced and could still react on mouse-events if the pointer-events property is set accordingly.
