In terms of another way to do DEM using <replicate> that is a lot faster, when 
the associated contour can be easily described by curves, take a look at

It uses only 10 lines of markup, including one <ellipse>  one <animate> tag and 
a <replicate> with a couple of <replicatePath> to simultaneous vary three 
attributes of one curve based on the two-dimensional input. The animation runs 
fairly fast in Opera, IE/ASV and FF4, though webKit doesn’t seem to handle it. 
Few DEM’s would be reducible to such simple curves though, as this terrain is 
“extruded” from the dark red curve shown in the drawing.

What is the speed like? I want to use it for an animation, so I need it to be 
able to cycle through the colors quickly. That's why I think bitmap DEMs would 
be faster.

Here's an example using using a bitmap and minus the color cycling:
