Anybody want to bring me up to date on animation? As you can gather from my recent posts, I've been buried in work on a WebSocket server. Before that, I'd been entirely sidetracked from my main project for a while and you didn't hear from me at all. Now, the WebSocket server is sufficiently developed to do some integration and do my demo again. The SVG part is likely quite simple for some of you, assuming animation is working. I'll be doing this with the WebSocket server. Browsers that I can use, that support the up-to-date Websocket protocol, include Chrome, Firefox, and MSIE (using a Google plug-in). If this can only be done properly in Opera, I'll have to do a little more work to get my server talking the older version of the websocket protocol that Opera now supports.
I will be sending live position data from a robot to the browser. The SVG app. is as simple as moving a circle around in a frame in response to the real-time data. I built this before, without animation, by updating x,y values for the circle location using javascript. But without animation, the effect was for the circle to jump from place to place. I expect the new improved app. to do much the same thing but to use animation to transform the jumps into smooth movement. I'll do the math. Just want to know what browsers currently support animation that I can update in real time; and if anybody has a best way of doing that. (Maybe what I've done before isn't best.)
