I'm not quite sure which sorts of motions those might be that you're interested in, but sure, " the basic animations like rotate, translate, scale, animate and animate motion [including keysplines]" are all that we've really got at our disposal. Well, except, we also have feDisplacement, though, that can change the course of motion:
http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/svgopen2008/bouncing3.svg (Opera or ASV only -- I'm waiting until November the 8th to try FF8 ) http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/text/fire7.svg (Opera or ASV only ) http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/text/bubbles8.svg (Opera or ASV only ) The nice thing about these last examples is that the text is still text -- it can be selected Of course we can animate the d attribute of a path so as to deform it as we move, and we can animate along a moving path, so that gives some flexibility. See http://cs.sru.edu/%7Eddailey/svg/animoval8b.svg (defective in FF7) Or http://cs.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/lizard2.svg (defective in Opera, I think ... see http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/message/65307 for discussion) Much of the "kinetic typography" that comes to mind from Movie credits involves 3D extrusions, something that SVG doesn't at present allow, though one day it could: http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/text/plastic8.svg The animated version at http://cs.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/twist.svg sorta works in Opera, FF and Chrome, though without native replicate in SVG the animation remains a good deal too slow. The illusion of 3D curl though is rather nice, you'd have to agree for something having only five lines of markup! Again in this last one, the text is still text (even though twisting in 3d) and remains accessible. I'd be interested to see the sorts of effects you're talking about.
