First of all, look at how the people were ranked: "We posed that question to developers, publishers, public relations people and freelance gaming press. How did we tabulate votes? We asked them to list their 10 names in order from highest to lowest. Top person got 10 points, bottom person got 1 point. We received more than 300 responses and based on their feedback, we came up with our top 30 most influential people."
This is a pretty fair method (objective at least). I don't know how well they defined the term influential to the voters, though, which is probably the problem. In other words, it isn't the most historically important people (or else Ralph Baer and Nolan Bushnell would be 1 and 2 most likely). And it isn't a list of people who wield the most influence today (how much say does Ralph Baer have on the direction of the gaming market today...not much, but he's on the list). Also, I'm a huge Steve Meretzky fan, but how much influence did a text adventure guy have on today's gaming market when you can't buy a text adventure today? I'm not saying that he didn't influence gaming, but I can see why he's not on the list in many people's opinion. I can also see them leaving off Sinclair. They are undoubtedly polling a large segment from the USA. And if they were really good, the pollsters could make the connection that Sinclair was responsible for starting many European developers who eventually went on to hit it big in the US market...but I can certainly see them overlooking that point. Gamespy published an article called "30 most influential people in gaming": http://www.gamespy.com/articles/march02/top30/ I know everyone has their own personal rank, but come on! Crowther in 24th?! Garriott in 7th?! Where's Julian Gollop, Brian Fargo, Steve Meretzky, "Woz", Chris Sawyer, Sir Clive Sinclair etcetc? Maybe we should do a similar, more "correct" list here at SWCollect? :) P.
