Certainly a random sampling of people is better than choosing 300 gaming historians with a passion for text adventures :-)))) (Unless you want a list of the 30 most influential text adventure writers :-) But then again, it all comes down to the definition of "influential," which they define too broadly. They say, "Who has helped shape the industry the most? Who are the most influential people in the gaming industry?"
How can anybody have had more influence on the gaming INDUSTRY than the inventor of the first commercial video game system and the first commercial video game? Certainly Crowther and Russell are two of the biggest pioneers in the history of computer gaming. Russell would probably get my #1 if you went that broad. Your last point is my point exactly.
