Tom,

I take a different approach to spyware, one that you might find useful. I use Norton Ghost to make an image (a sector by sector snapshot) of my C drive (or Windows partition, depending if you have only a single drive) that contains the latest drivers and apps for my hardware. My actual data, i.e. documents, e-mail folders, art, etc, gets stored on a separate drive (or partition). My Windows installation is configured to look to my data drive before I make the Ghost image. Every few months (or weeks, depending how much I've messed around with my machine in the interim) I simply use the Ghost imag, which I created before the spyware got the chance to install itself on my machine, to replace my C drive.  My installation is once again fresh and hassle free.

Of course, there is still the possibility that malware will get saved to your data drive (or partition) but that's the risk I take. I use Ad-aware, etc to check my drives for an extra level of protection,

Subject: [SWCollect] Spyware

I had a LOT of spyware on my computer as I've been using same drive/programs for a long time (like close to 100 spybots). If you'd like to check these sites are free (scan and REMOVE, many ask you to pay to remove). If anyone runs I'd be interested in hearing results (see if anyone has more than I did). I run both as spyware items are hard coded it seems, one might find some the other misses.
