The good news is, apparently Adobe has addressed this problem with the
installer payload that comes out with the flash player 10. Yay! I just
tested, and to my surprise, it keeps you at least in the same browser now (FF
stays in FF, Safari stays in Safari, IE stays in IE).

However, I still get the weirdness that If I have multiple versions of FF
installed on one machine, and I am in one of the lower versions, and I upgrade
flash, when it restarts, it now launches the new (3.0.3) version and re-loads
the page. But at least it's still FF! Considerably less frustrating, for
sure (now only a little annoying).

Subject: Adobe "ExpressInstall" installer bug... please vote

https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-250

This bug is filed with Adobe about buggy behavior with their express-install
installer re-opening the wrong browser when it updates the plugin and restarts
the browser. I've confirmed this on lots of different systems which have
various different browsers (IE, FF, Safari, etc) installed. However, this bug
hasn't gotten much attention in the bug-system yet, and I'd like to get their
attention called to it. All I'm asking is that you go to the link above and
vote for the item in question.

Hopefully, we can get them to address this so users of ExpressInstall don't
have this ugly user-experience when updating the player.
