i use external CSS for the same purpose, and have used it successfully with
and without an @import.

Your link works fine (100% in ff) -- I notice it is using an
@import

whereas I'm using  <link href=". . . . ./name.css" rel="stylesheet"
type="text/css" />

could this be accountable?? (just casting out ideas)
