Exactly. If you need to init the flash file with some values to start off, then you can just add them via flashvars. Once the Flash is embedded, you can do whatever two way or one way communications required through ExternalInterface.
BTW - you are using SWFObject 1.x notation. I assume you know this is old, and no longer really supported (although it does work).
