I'm pretty sure the dreaded white flash is usually solved by the following:

1.  Have a stylesheet that defines the background color of that particular
div  (inline styles will be lost since SWFObject replaces the div)
2.  Add a bgcolor parameter to the SWFObject that is the color you want.
3.  Add wmode parameter and set it to transparent.
