swfobject has the "addDomLoadEvent()" function, which you can use for this. You 
don't need to use jquery.

  version 19. :)

  But in any case I do not have access to add code to the <head> since
  we serve these Flash items in via a 3rd party software solution
  (Mercado). It's really strange the way things work around here. If I
  had a few days I'd tell you. ;-)

  In any case it does seem to work correctly in IE/Safari with the alt
  content as well. Just FF is being a pest..

  Sometimes you just can't put it all in the <head>...
