Jeff,
My apologies for going 'off topic' I think I was merely venting some
frustration over the thread not really venturing near the topic I had hoped.
What I was hoping for were technical pointers in regards to implementing
streaming documents.

I am hoping that we can touch on that again. As an aside, since you bring it
up; the reason that they implemented the SLA in the first place was because
previously customers had experienced service problems on EC2. I think its
great that they offer discounts if the uptime is not 99.9%.
http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?threadID=19714&start=60&tstart=0
Here are 116 posts from just under a year ago full of angst and anxiety.

http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2007/10/02/amazon-ec2-outage-wipes-out-data/
The EC2 platform is lovely in its simplicity, the great thing is that it
relies exclusively on S3 for data storage, when a 'virtual machine' is
terminated all data is gone. What happens if something happens to a VM while
it is in the process of saving data to S3 ? If not designed correctly you
run the risk of there being no transactional logs left. There is no way to
find out what is 'missing'. Sure you can see what was written and S3 may
store its data in triplicate, but it is the *same* data. This is why RAID is
not backup, data corruption gets replicated just as readily.

The issue with relying on providers that rely on cloud computing is
compounded by the fact that a client is dependant on the provider for
getting access to the data. I might find it unlikely that Amazon will fold
anytime soon, but when the CFO of some upstart online publishing venture
absconds to Panama or the reality of the fundemental untenability of 'cheap
money' finally hits.. How can I convince Amazon that *that* bucket belongs
to *me*?

Anyway, thank you for your well wishing.

  Best Regards,
Joe
