(Oops, I replied privately by mistake. Sending it again.) GridBagLayout first gives both of the lists as much space as they ask for (their preferred size). Then, if there's any space left over, that additional space is split evenly between the two lists -- that's what the weight means. There's no way of specifying that they should be exactly the same width, as far as I know.
