Jonas,

I found out the problem. I had these JLists inside JScrollPane 
for scrolling. I was using SunForte for layout and found out that
some min/max dimensions are being set on the scroll pane. After I made
it all zero, everything works great. With 0.5 for both JList, the space
gets divided equaly among both lists.
