If it's a modern hotel they probably use magstripe keycards, which don't have the room number printed on them because they re-encode them after you check out. Even Kulpsville has those things for many years. So Doubletree either uses some other method of authentication to thwart unauthorized breakfast-eaters from using your ticket, or the desk clerk was just blowing smoke. Any other theories?

presenter is the registered guest, but the clerk told me they do
"backtracking" to prevent their breakfasts from being eaten by
