I just bought an 32GB Acer Iconia A500 (without internal cellphone - get
the A501 with cellphone). It's not a laptop by any means and indeed cost
more than a reasonable lappy at staples.
However, if you in the xPad market then I would recommend this one or
its cousin the Acer EEE Pad Transformer. Both devices support a docking
station, have bluetooth connectivity for an array of BT devices
including keyboards etc and can accept USB devices such as memory sticks
or external HDD's.
Both these devices run Android 3.0 so there's no Netflix/Hulu _yet_ but
CBS's TV.com works just fine as does spb.com.
Off to watch England get thrashed by the Argies in Rugby.

Rich, take a look at the HTC VIEW. It supports a bluetooth keyboard in
addition to the on-screen keyboard, you can use a stylus to scribe notes
on screen and it is compatable with apps like "Blackboard" that many
schools are now using. There are Kindle and Nook apps as well so
textbooks can be viewed on it. It is WiFi enabled and can be connected
to a cellular network(for a fee) when out of WiFi range. They are being
offered by several carriers, most notably Sprint. Hope this helps. CRAIG

Subject: [Swlfest] OT question - tablet PC recommendations
Date: Fri, 9 Sep 2011 11:47:41 -0400
Hey folks -
Three questions for those of you with tablet PCs: I have a colleague
looking to get one for a 17YO and it would be used for both schoolwork
as well as multimedia / social networking. Ease-of-use and reliability
are important.
Question 1: Can external keyboards be easily used with tablets for
typing-centric apps (e.g. word processing / presentation)?
Question 2: Or are tablets really sub-optimal for this task?
Question 3: If tablets are indeed suitable for this, which one would
you recommend, factoring ease of use, cost, and reliability?
Thanks...
RC
