I’m not defending Global 24 however, it should be pointed out that none of this really tells me much about the organization other than poor communication and sloppiness but we knew that. Their failure is far more telling.
All the payment destination tells you is that the account holder (Mr. Demers) didn’t change the account settings on PayPal. Assuming that the organization was a sole proprietorship, for example, the account only needs to be held in one person’s name and associated with his social security number. I don’t think he would even need a business bank account unless it was a charitable endeavor (although a business acct would be normal). It does not tell you anything regarding his honesty, only that as John says, his business practices might have been sloppy. After all, if you give something to the charity on the corner, do you know which account the payment is going to? In both cases, you have to assume the person is honest and manages the business properly. If he established a PayPal account back in their early days, they were all “personal” accounts which could later be authorized for business purposes, too. It’s only as PayPal has tried to behave more as a real bank that some of the newer accounts were forced into more strict practices. An acknowledgement is nice and certainly courteous (and good business practice!) but no more necessary than Amazon sending me a thank you message. Discourteous maybe but since PayPal sends me a payment confirmation I know who I paid, when, and how much. My guess is that from everything else we heard, Global 24 wasn’t good at personal communication. (IIRC, they failed repeatedly to answer messages from programming suppliers including PCJ and WofR.) I’m disappointed they failed but as Keith Perron has said, there were warning signs from the start that things weren’t quite right. We wanted them to succeed and were willing to part in some cash to help that. They are off the air now so I write it off as one that didn’t pan out and move along. I never expected to get anything back except some radio waves and I got that much, for a while. -- -Rob de Santos From: Swlfest [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ron Hunsicker Sent: Saturday, March 7, 2015 9:05 AM To: [email protected]; Discussion list for the Winter SWL Fest Subject: Re: [Swlfest] [NASWA] Global 24 GONE I, too, sent a few bucks via PayPal and was similarly disappointed to find that the contribution was not acknowledged and that the $$ went to Mr. Demers. I never received an acknowledgement from anyone at Global 24, let alone a "thank you". Furthermore, when I received my receipt from PayPal, it showed that the money went into the individual account of one Jeff Demers. I have to say that I found all that a bit unusual and more than a little sloppy. -- Ron Hunsicker 1238 Cleveland Avenue Wyomissing, PA 19610-2102 610.478.0371 ronhunsi at ptd dot net
