Dave, good news--the PDF spec sheet for the PantronX Titus II says it
has "Top mounted controls: Volume +/-, Tune, Set". So that's a good
sign for blind folks and others like me who like tactile
controls. Here's a link to more info about this revolutionary
portable SDR, with instructional videos! http://titusradio.com/
I'm hoping we can get this radio's developer to do a presentation and
demo at the next SWLfest, and I'm working on that.

Hi Ed,
To answer your question, maybe yes and maybe no.
A touchscreen device out of the box isn't accessible to a blind person.
However having said that touchscreen devices can be made accessible
by use of special software and different techniques of maneuvering
around a touchscreen.
For example the Apple I Phone is accessible out of the box using
screen reading software called Voice Over. Voice Over is standard
equipment in all Apple products.
When the screen reading software is active I can move my finger
around the screen and it will speak what is under my finger in
synthesized voice. When I want to activate something in an app I
just "double tap" and the appropriate function occurs.
There are a bunch of gestures, taps, and swipes that are used.
That's just an example of the kind of accessibility that can be
achieved even with a touchscreen device.
