called Shortwave - The Verge

It's unfortunate that Google has managed to trademark the name "shortwave"
for an app for finding and playing podcasts. This will undoubtedly create
confusion in peoples' minds about what shortwave really is. In trademark
law, this is referred to as "dilution", but in this case the term shortwave
isn't already a trademark that can be infringed upon and diluted.

I found this explanation by a trademark attorney about how a common word can
be trademarked. She says, "a common word can be trademarked if it is
arbitrary, suggestive, or in some cases, even descriptive of the products.
But it can't be trademarked if it is the product's generic word."

Several years ago after the creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
characters trademarked one of their names as 'Michelangelo', most kids
surveyed said that Michelangelo was a cartoon turtle with superpowers. The
dumbing down of America.

Someone should trademark a new enema product called Google. What's in a
name?
