John, thanks for sharing that interesting history about WNYC. Last spring a memorial service for our departed SWLfest friend Michael Pool (the 'Radio Professor') was fittingly held outdoors at the former transmission site of WNYC-AM in what's now known as 'Transmitter Park' in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York City.

Note the link below to the audio and transcript of a 1937 broadcast by WNYC about the dedication of its new transmission facility there, during which the New York City "Police and Sanitation Bands" played live on the air!

The 1960s were pre-NPR by a significant measure. WNYC then was municipally owned by the City of New York (WNYE was and may still be owned of the New York City Board of Education) and it’s output more resembled that of present day Pacifica (which owns WBAI today) than present day NPR. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia famously used WNYC to read the comic pages to children during one of the city’s lengthy mid century newspaper strikes.
