Ed,
I enjoyed watching parts of the Toynbee puzzle movie once again. It was
terrific seeing faces that have left us (Bill Oliver, Tom Ledoux) as well as
some still with us (Ed Mauger, John Arthur, Tim Tron, Harold Cones). I had
forgotten how much of the historical puzzle the filmmakers were able to uncover
through attending one of the FESTs and getting in touch with people like Ulis
Flemming who knew something about the Toynbee stuff.
I need some popcorn.

I miss the DoubleTree. When I first walked into the placethought it was too
classy for us 'festers! The central gatheringcourtyard (with full bar) and free
breakfast and meeting rooms workedwell for us. I never asked management for
permission for roof access, but(if one were to know such things)
co-conspirators and I always managed tosurreptitiously gain access and
discreetly string dipoles and otherantennas up there and drop feedlines down to
the Presidential Suite'sbalcony and into our Hospitality Room with banks of
amazing radioreceivers--and enough room for hanging out with refreshments. It
wasperfect!
We all have special memories there, but one of my favorites is thespecial
secret pre-screening of the Sundance award-winning documentaryfilm, "Resurrect
Dead: The Mystery Of The Toynbee Tiles" at theMarch 2011 SWLFest--with the film
director and a proper popcornmachine! Parts of that film were shot at the 2006
Winter SWL Fest, where several 'festers played key roles in pivotal sequences
that led tothe solving of a decades-old mystery: the identification and motives
of astrange and obscure 1980's pirate shortwave broadcaster whose bizarre
andmysterious messaging campaign was the subject of the film.
If you've never seen this superb mystery film, it's worth checking out(now
streaming online for free). You'll see several vintage scenes fromthe SWLfest
with several vintage SWLfesters..
