Man, this sounds so familiar! I was President of a local area ham radio club
for a few years. One year I convinced my wife to come to our annual Christmas
party. It was her first, and last, amateur radio party. Getting over being
one of the few women in the room was not too difficult. Things got a little
uncomfortable for her watching the number of guys running around the room with
all sorts of antennas, radios and battery packs strapped to them. What really
took the cake though was when she found out that the guys had chosen a simplex
frequency to use in the restaurant so that they could communicate with each
other from table to table!!

My motto is "bring the wife once" ...

... they usually don't want to go a second time

....... and you get to go alone every single year after that. Harmless fun!

My family started calling it the "Winter NERD Fest" the year I came home
with
a new Gilfer-modified NRD-535 and matching key ring. My wife said, "look
kids,
they built a commemorative "NERD 535" radio. She will never forget or
forgive
me for leaving her in the hospitality room for 45 minutes with various
festers
in different stages of inebriation. My strategy worked as planned.

Hey Jim- Are you sure that's your wife an not mine? Because it sure sounds
like her!

While we were dating I went to a couple of holiday parties year after year
that my ham club holds...so one year she asked "Do any of the wives or
girlfriends ever go?" I said "some do"....she said "How come you never ask
me to go?"....well, honey I thought you would be bored.... so that year
(maybe 2003...could have been 2002) I took her to the LIMARC Christmas
party.... she's never asked to go to another one since!

It's good to have separate interests from time to time just to clear your
head. However, I am actually looking forward to when the little guy (who is
only 5 months old) is old enough to go with me to NASCAR races and if he
wants...to come with my to the Dayton Hamvention....fine.
