Nick Malpas - "Truth and Politics - Ethical and Ontological Considerations"
"Is there a duty to be truthful in politics? What is the relationship
between truth and the political? These are the two questions I will
consider. I will look at 3 main approaches to the issue of lying in
politics: deontological, consequentialist, and political realist. To
properly understand what is at issue in this ethical debate, I turn to
Hannah Arendt to develop an account of the close but problematic
interrelation of truth and the political. This ontological connection of
truth and the political is not taken into account by the main ethical
positions on lying in politics. I will argue that truthfulness is only one
virtue in the political realm and may be trumped by others. Politics, while
it ought and must generally respect the truth, is not subject to an
absolute duty of truthfulness."
