This will be Book One (about 300 pages) of Bertand Russell's "A History of
Western Philosophy", which covers ancient philosophy from the pre-Socratics to
later Roman writers (including Thales, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides,
Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Protagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Cynics, Epicureans,
Stoics, and Plotinus).
No need to do any reading beforehand unless you're keen, but if there's
something that you're particularly interested in hearing about or discussing,
do drop me an e-mail.

***
We'll start just after 6.30pm, and continue till 8pm-8.30pm. Format is usually:
short speech, then two or three rounds of discussion, with breaks in-between.
Often we'll go to dinner afterwards. Participants are welcome to come or to
leave at any point during the evening.
Incidentally, anyone is welcome to present on any topic related to philosophy
(just let me know, and I'll book you in).
No cost. No reading required beforehand. All welcome!
Location: members bar, floor 1 (keep winding up to the top of the stairs), The
Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, Sydney (100 metres from a
Central railway station exit). We'll be armed with the Oxford Companion to
Philosophy and a bell. Usually we meet ***out on the terrace***. Usually a
small group -- half a dozen people sitting in a circle.
Hope to see you there!
