I think one benefit of symfony is the compatibility for PHP >= 5.0. But if i think about it...in most instances many providers that i know use Ubuntu 6.06 LTS or Debian Etch and this means they use PHP Version >= 5.1.2. I would say "symfony 1.1 compatible >= 5.1" can be recommended. In this PHP release was also PDO imported.
