Hi list,

I have to admin I'm feeling a bit confused.
Today I wanted to have a look at the progress of the Italian
documentation to give my help.

First, I had to find where documentation has been saved on Wiki.
On the site I didn't find any link (for example from official
documentation) pointing to localized version (perhaps with a small
advice: help us to translate...).
I had to find and follow the link starting from the weekly newsletter
published on the blog.

I'm from Italy, thus I first opened the Italian translation, currently
under development.
The link is here
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/it_IT/book/1.0
Because I'm fundamentally a curious developer I decided to trim the
URL to http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/it_IT/ (an
hypothetic Italian homepage) and I found it contains the same TOC of
the other page.

At the beginning I didn't take care of that.
Then I had a look at a few pages and I decided I wanted to apply a few
fixes.
Because I contribute to many other open source projects I know how
discussions are important thus I tried to find a place where
communicate with other Italian translators... I didn't find it neither
in the forum, between groups or in Trac!

That's bad. How do the other translators work?
I had a look at France.
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/fr_FR includes
"pointless" information while this page
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Resources/fr_FR
it's an excellent starting point.
I found it from
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/fr_FR/book/1.0
where there is the book TOC and this precious link.

Let me say you French guys have an excellent organization. You
published all information a person like me needs to know to contribute
to a translation.
See, for example
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/fr_FR/HowToContribute

But... why all pages belong to
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/fr_FR/
"namespace" while http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Resources/fr_FR
not?

I had a look at the other localized documentations and I think it
could be better to suggest a shared guideline to organize them.
For instance, I suggest

1. The main documentation root (http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/
Documentation/) cannot be empty. it should, at least, list all
localized documentation perhaps with completation progress.
Curious guys like me will be able to read more information when
trimming URLs.

I'm going to create this page in the next hours, let me know if you do
not agree.

2. The main language root (http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/
Documentation/<lang>/) should be considered as an homepage.
It should include a link to all available book TOCs (for instance 1.0
trunk and 1.1 trunk).

Additionally, it could list resources and point to other useful pages.
See for example http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/de_DE
and http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/fr_FR

3. All localized pages should belong to
http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Documentation/<lang>
namespace.
If for somewhat reason they have to be stored in other directories
such as http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/Resources/fr_FR, I would
suggest to create http://trac.symfony-project.com/wiki/fr_FR as well.

4. Documentation should include an explanation about where translation
discussion take place.
I saw a few countries decided to use groups, others to use wiki pages.

For instance, in Italy the group symfony-it has been created but I
didn't know who is in charge of it and it contains only 2 posts.
I'm going to try to contact group admin and check whether it could be
used for translators as well.

Additionally, a section could be reserved on the forum.
Any other suggestions?

5. Any other proposals?

I'm curious to know your opinion about this topic. :)
Sorry for the long long post.
