You mean - create an adaptor approach?

In the end a standard has to be set. Whether it is a helper or plugin
doesnt really matter as ultimately it is you that decides what is
used. For the latest and greatest you'd have to write your own version
of the PHP class that outputs the code in order to use the latest
functions in the Javascript anyway. If that is the case - just create
a basic plugin.
