I'm happy to work on the first step this Sunday (September 26), if
that isn't too late.

I'm really surprised that so many people want to switch to Twig for
the default templating language!
So, based on the results, I've looked yesterday on how we can make the
switch. After some proof-of-concept, I propose a two step migration:
* During the first step, we switch the default renderer to Twig and
keep the Templating Component as is (meaning that using PHP is still
very easy; just add :php at the end of the template name). We can also
move the TwigBundle files to FrameworkBundle as it is now a mandatory
dependency. Then, we can move all internal templates to Twig
(exception templates, welcome page, WebProfiler templates). Finally,
the documentation needs to be updated to reflect our new default
choice (and we need to add a note that explains why we use Twig and
not PHP as the default templating language).
* In a second step, we work on optimizing (performance, helpers, ...)
the Twig integration. That will require more work and a lot of design
decisions.
Now, I'm looking for some volunteers to do the actual work. The first
step should be trivial enough. And for the second one, I will help
whoever want to work on it.
Anyone?
