Thanks for the reply, either the 'enable ACL support<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilePermissions#ACLs>' link wasn't there when I first tried it, or I must have completely ignored it, I'm sorry for that. I guess that reading these kind of things quickly just doesn't do... there's so many new things to learn in symfony 2, and I'm pretty short of time.
Also, I find it pretty unclear why one should not use the umask option, in general, the web directory is the only one really visible to the world so why should I be concerned with it being publicly writable on the server?
