I'd prefer option A. PhpBB can notify new threads and posts by mail. I can't remember if it has native support or via a plugin/patch.
The google group address can registered to receive all notifications generated by PhpBB. This will reduce the disruption while users migrate. But the forum has something annoying: the need of post several times to be a "trusted" member.
