A payment plugin could be used for other types of websites, not only
for ecommerce. I see there is and will be a big need to this type of
plugin.

Furthermore, although Magento is a beast, with tons of features and a
large community, it also has some issues. An ecommerce platform on top
of symfony would be a nice alternative.
