OK, I think I get it now (after comment 23 it "clicked" for me).

So I think I am +1 to this now, even with the strange .diff(cos) thing. My only thing (again) is that I would like to see this explained in the docstring, as you can see from the discussion above that this is very confusing.

Also, I'm still not 100% mathematically convinced that diff(f(x), x).diff(f(x)) should be 0. Can you cite an example of somewhere where this is computed as so with the Lagrangian?
