I missed that this task is included to "Step-by-step Expression Manipulation" GSoC idea. I thought (by the title) that this idea is about how to control of the process of expression manipulation, while "show steps" rather is targeted as explanation and information. But now I see that the idea's description contains all of this issue.
So, to avoid splitting of the discussion area lets slow down with discussion in this issue. Or at least take into account that the main discussion process will be in GSoC.
Chris, the idea about the internal decorators is good. The question how to adapt it for the user use-cases and for good output. But lets look what the GSoC students will investigate and say.
