Additionally, I know it is *possible* to make those very characters work in a LaTeX document, at least using XeTeX, because I've done it before. See https://github.com/asmeurer/Tech-Writing-Final-Project (the report directory, files named sample1.tex through sample17.tex, for example, sample10.tex contains the integral characters).
