Sage 5.1 seems to have fixed the problem:
$sage -t sympy/external/tests/test_sage.py
sage -t "sympy/external/tests/test_sage.py"
[3.6 s]
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All tests passed!
Total time for all tests: 3.6 seconds
