I agree that it's well-defined, and it makes sense from the function point
of view. The issue is that that point of view is used by maybe 1% of users
(maybe more if you consider it to be recursively "used" by users of
diffgeom). Of the remaining 99%, 50% will end up typing
expression_with_no_lambda(argument), either by accident or because they
don't know better, and instead of getting an error, they will get a result
that, if you don't pay close attention, looks like something that you
want. I think I might have even accidentally done this myself by some typo
or something. If you look at the IRC logs for #sympy, there are at least
two instances in the past day or so where new users have been confused by
this.
Regarding your workarounds, will it help if I leave in the _recursive_call
helper, or should that just be deleted?
