Just before continuing with the removal, here is another proposal (I am not
after a compromise, so accept it only if you completely agree):
The _recursive_call helper can check whether there are any callable objects
in the tree on it's first call (the user call) and raise an error with a
nice explanation if there is no such object. A problem is that library code
will need to catch the error, and I have mixed feelings about this, but it
will work well for interactive use. I can implement it now and provide a
pull request.
If you are against this proposal, then I probably will need the private
helper to be left as it is for use in the diffgeom module.
