I would refactor such things out to a separate function that does shallow
application of non-deep functions. Doing that would be relatively easy, and
would just have to call expand(deep=False). On the other hand, if
expand(deep=False) tried to do magic, writing such a thing would be very
hard.
I remember there is already some function that Mateusz wrote that applies a
function only at a given level of an expression tree, but I can't remember
what it was called at the moment.
