Strictly speaking, it's correct, because it does the expansion from the
bottom up, giving
(1 + x*(x**2 + x + 1))**2
1 + 2*x*(x**2 + x + 1) + x**2*(x**2 + x + 1)**2
This is really blocking on issue 3338.
