Comment #43 on issue 2482 by [email protected]: Stop bundling mpmath
http://code.google.com/p/sympy/issues/detail?id=2482

Hey!

I would just like to add one negative consequence of bundling mpmath.

Sympy has a Fedora package: https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/sympy, but unfortunately, it hasn't been updated to version 0.7.2 yet. There is an open bugzilla ticket to update to version 0.7.2: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=866044

Updating should in theory be as easy as using the new tarball and rebuilding the rpm package. However, since packages are not allowed to bundle libraries in Fedora (for details, see: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:No_Bundled_Libraries), the sympy package has a 500+ line patch to remove the bundled mpmath: http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/sympy.git/tree/sympy-0.7.1-strip-internal-mpmath.patch.
Of course, this patch doesn't apply any more to sympy 0.7.2...

As a middle ground, I suggest that the users of sympy are offered an option to either use the bundled mpmath or the system-provided one. Would this be hard to implement?

Thanks and best regards,
Tadej
