Google Code keeps download counts for the tarball distributions 
http://code.google.com/p/sympy/downloads/list?can=2&q=&sort=-downloadcount&colspec=Filename%20Summary%20Uploaded%20ReleaseDate%20Size%20DownloadCount.
  This might not even be one of the biggest ways of getting sympy, though, 
considering the existence of things like easy_install.

Another thing to consider is all the people who have forked sympy on github: 
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/network/members.
