That's pretty general in Linux.
I can fail to work though.
That's usually considered a misconfiguration, but it's sometimes hard to find out what to configure and why. (Linux and PuTTY need to agree on what kind of escape code convention should be used, so both sides can be misconfigured - usually it's PuTTY, but not always.)

On Windows, something similar should work, but the exact sequence to use might be different.

The same goes for *BSDs (such as Mac OS).

So, unless you're willing to deal with platform differences, I'd stay away from that.
