Indeed, that's a good example, thank you. I'll reply here to keep the discussion coherent. I still believe that it is possible to rebase gsoc_3 on master after gsoc_2 was merged, but this will require juggling around with commits and will thus require much more effort and make it possible to accidentally remove important stuff altogether. Therefore I totally agree that merging master on the gsoc_3 is the least troublesome solution right now.
