See https://github.com/blog/1214-notification-email-improvements. GitHub uses BCC and CC in intelligent ways, so perhaps all you need to do is set your email to filter out BCC'd emails. You can also use gmail to mute the conversation if it's just a handful of threads that are too much for you.
The real question here is, do we even need sympy-patches any more? It looks like you can get the same behavior just by watching the sympy repos, even if you don't have push access (can someone verify this?). Additionally, you can setup email updates for issues with the NeedsReview labels (or any label) at http://code.google.com/p/sympy/issues/subscriptions.
