Tom, how did you solve this? I'm in the same boat as you - I'd like to
get informed on new pull requests, but I don't want to get all the
mail from each, unless I actually participated there.


Just as aaron said: github sends mails with your name in CC in the cases where it used to send mails, and the new mails have you only in BCC. I use thunderbird (icedove in debian) and just set up filters to automatically mark mails from github with me only in BCC as read and move them to a new folder [b/c deleting seemed too scary]).
